The “Guanacaste Wind Farm” project, located in Mogote, Bagaces Canton, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, comprises the installation and operation of 55 wind energy converter units (wind turbines) with a total generation capacity of 49.50 MW. Each unit has an installed capacity of 900 kW, making it the largest wind farm in Costa Rica. The project’s coordinates are 10° 46′ 58” N latitude, 85° 16′ 34” W longitude. Notably, the expected capacity factor for the wind farm is unusually high at 56.6%, according to an independent technical assessment. Implemented in two phases, phase 1 became operational in September 2009, with the construction of transmission lines and installation of 28 WECs. Phase 2, involving an additional 27 WECs, started operations in December 2009. The wind turbines are ENERCON E-44 model, known for their gearless variable speed design, contributing to higher wind utilization and energy conversion efficiency. The project technology is considered to reflect good practice.
